The population of nightjars has increased in recent years taking it from a red to an amber status, largely due to better forest management and an increase in clear-fell areas as conifer forests have been harvested but it remains a species that one has to make an effort to go to see and hear. Almost everything about the Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) is unusual. It is as inimitable as Rod himself, who effortlessly mingles important, specialist first hand knowledge with a relaxed, genuine style of delivery.
