Stoke Park’s huge yellow house stands out alongside the M32. The historic park has a
variety of grassland, ancient woodland and wet habitats. Under higher-tier farm
stewardship, restoration efforts (human and bovine) battle the invasive scrub (and Tor-
grass Brachypodium rupestre) on the calcareous grassland slopes. Let’s see what
calcicole species we can find. Potential items of interest are Hoary Plantain Plantago
media
, Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor, Burnet Saxifrage Pimpinella saxifraga,
Parsley Piert Aphanes arvensis Pyramidal Orchid Anacamptis pyramidalis, Dyer’s
Greenweed Genista tinctoria, Pale Flax Linum bienne and Purple Gromwell
Aegonychon purpurocaeruleum. Various damp-loving plants around the scrape and
wetter meadow areas and new introductions may be emerging, brought in with Ashton
Court green hay.
Meet at the colourful entrance off Romney Avenue, Lockleaze
///blog.cute.punk, at ST611771 (nearest postcode: BS7 9TD). Served by buses 24 and
72, and cycle routes. Roadside parking. Do not drive through the bus gate into
Cheswick Village.
