FIELD MEETING. Leader: Professor Sir Stephen Sparks.
As usual members of Bath G.S. and WEGA are invited to attend
Spring Cove Cliff near Birnbeck Pier, Weston-super-Mare, is well known for volcanic outcrops within the Carboniferous High Tor Limestone. The meeting offers the best chance to view some of the best exposures of pillow basalt and tuffs in the Bristol Region. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so hammering and collecting samples is not allowed.
Access to the Spring Cove Beach is via a short path found next to a derelict building on the cliffs approximately 300 metres north east of Birnbeck Pier (ST 310 625). There is limited parking nearby but the site can be accessed using the number 1 (Sand Bay) bus from Weston-super-Mare Railway Station, alighting at the next stop after Birnbeck Pier.
For those in possession of the Geologists’ Association Guide No 78 ‘Geology of the Bristol Region’ full details of the site start at page 89.
