Among the conifer plantations here are some fine chunks of broadleaved woodland that boast an extensive list of species including Narrow Buckler-fern Dryopteris carthusiana, Common Bistort Bistorta officinalis, Small Teasel Dipsacus pilosus, Herb-paris Paris quadrifolia and Trailing St John’s-wort Hypericum humifusum. There should also be a chance to compare Silver Birch Betula pendula with Downy Birch Betula pubescens, using the much-vaunted Atkinson Discriminant Function. Nearly 20 species of brambles have been recorded, and Lord’s Wood is also notable as one of very few places in our region where it is possible to see Sphagnum moss.
Meet by the entrance to the wood on Birchwood Lane at ST63096320 ///attending.refrain.sometime, nearest postcode BS49 4NF. There is parking on the verges around here, but not a great deal so do lift-share if possible.
