This most curious squiggly artificial hill perched between the ring road and Emerson’s Green on the eastern fringes of Bristol hosts an interesting and varied flora. We may encounter the likes of Wild Basil Clinopodium vulgare, Bristly Oxtongue Picris hieracioides, Rough Hawk’s-beard Crepis biennis, Grass Vetchling Lathyrus nissolia and Hop Trefoil Trifolium campestre, as well as a particularly beautiful species of bramble: Rubus echinatus. There are also ten-year-old records for Basil-thyme Clinopodium acinos, Nettle-leaved Bellflower Campanula trachelium, Woolly Thistle Cirsium eriophorum and Southern Marsh Orchid Dactylorhiza praetermissa, which it would be good to refind. The pathside population of Common Eyebright Euphrasia nemorosa is rather unusual in our area.

Meet on the paved area with the piece of public art at the bend in Johnson Road, at ST67167645 ///prices.allow.lively. Plenty of parking in nearby streets. Nearest postcode BS16 7JE.
