The Clive Lovatt Memorial Lecture ‘RARE PLANTS OF THE SOMERSET LIMESTONE’ Speaker: Helena Crouch.

The Mendip Hills and Avon Gorge are dramatic areas of Carboniferous Limestone, famous not only for their scenery but also for their unique and characteristic flora. Around Bath the underlying rock is Jurassic Limestone. At a local scale, the often complex geology results in some unusual plant assemblages and provides conditions for a high number of species, including many which are rare or scarce. Quarrying and mining have created additional habitats for some unexpected plant species. This talk will celebrate the special plants of these precious habitats which have drawn botanists to Somerset for centuries.

Venue: Redland Quaker Meeting House 126 Hampton Road, Redland, Bristol, BS6 6JE
